Shell Gasolines: Treat Your Car to the Very Best

Next time you're on the road and need gas, pull in to Shell and fill up with Shell gasolines. We think you'll like the difference! We offer three unleaded gasoline grades: Shell Regular, Shell Plus and Shell Premium. These three grades of gasoline meet the octane demands of nearly all engines. Shell Regular typically has an antiknock index of 87, which is sufficient for most cars designed to use regular unleaded gasoline. Shell Plus (typically, an 89 index) meets the octane needs of most cars designed to run on leaded regular gasoline, as well as some cars not satisfied by regular unleaded. Shell Premium satisfies virtually all engines, and is rated at 91, 92, or 93 depending on the market.

Should I Use Regular, Plus or Premium?

As engines accumulate miles, they also accumulate deposits in the combustion chamber that usually increase the engine’s octane requirement. The deposits reduce combustion chamber volume, increase the compression ratio and increase octane requirement. The insulating effect of these deposits increases combustion temperatures, which can also increase octane requirement. Most engines are designed with this octane requirement increase in mind, and the recommended gasoline grade usually satisfies the octane requirement for the life of the engine. However, in some cases the octane requirement increases sufficiently to require gasoline of a higher octane quality to satisfy the engine. Normally using the next higher octane grade will eliminate the knock. Adding an octane supplement to the fuel tank may increase the octane rating of the fuel, but this is usually much more expensive than purchasing the higher grade.
